JRF solutions on worklessness
Local initiatives to help workless people find and keep paid work: evidence from research: a report for the Joseph Rowntree Foundation by Pamela Meadows.
The review aims to inform practice within Government’s new Working Neighbourhoods Fund (WNF). In the review, Pamela Meadows summarises and updates work carried out earlier for JRF in its Work and Opportunities programme that drew to a close in 2001.
One of the key messages is that disadvantaged areas tend to contain concentrations of people who are at a disadvantage in the labour market, and this shows in high rates of worklessness. However, the nature of the jobs opportunities available and the composition of the workless population both differ between areas. For this reason, solutions need to be local, both with respect to the kind of jobs people are likely to be able to get, and with respect to the individuals living in the area and their individual problems.
