Democracy and Empowerment in London

Special conference event 5th June 2008

Under New Labour, neighbourhoods have been at the centre of policies aimed at tackling disadvantage, improving service delivery, renewing democracy, engaging citizens, and creating sustainable communities. There has been a plethora of initiatives including the New Deal for Communities, the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund, area committees, neighbourhood forums, community calls for action, quality parishes, and neighbourhood charters.

The conference will explore current and future neighbourhood arrangements in London in the context of the wider debate about the future of local democracy. Among the questions to be asked are: what arrangements work best for London? Is there scope for urban parishes? How will neighbourhoods support the role of the elected member as a community leader?
