Adrian Barritt, Adur Voluntary Action, presentation to NAVCA Cuts Seminars Autumn 2010

This paper is the full version of an abbreviated talk given to support a series of seminars convened by NAVCA (UK National Association for Voluntary and Community Action) in Autumn 2010. Their purpose was to share thoughts about ways of coping with cuts in public expenditure, and the impact of these on members, in the context of the promotion of the concept of the “Big Society” by the new Conservative/Liberal coalition government.

Simon Berry who worked with CSC towards the end of Every Action Counts has now left DEFRA and lauched a new project - ColaLife...
ColaLife, an independent non-profit, is working with Coca-Cola to open their distribution channels in developing countries to carry ’social products’ - oral rehydration salts, high-dose vitamin A, water purification tablets - to save children’s lives. The ColaLife Participation Ride is a sponsored cycle ride from Boulogne to Biaritz to raise funds for vital fieldwork. Your support is needed!

Raise your voice and make sure everyone is counted!
There is going to be a census of the population in 2011, as there is every 10 years. The census will try to list all of the people who live in the country – but chances are many won’t be included, notably the ‘hidden homeless’ as well as destitute asylum-seekers.

This has resulted in a toolkit authored by Bernard Godding and a team within ECA, which will be launched at an international conference in Bonn, Germany on September 20 2010.

The Prime Minister says ‘we are all in this together’ and building it is the responsibility of every citizen as well as every Government department. nef welcomes the broad vision but recognises that everything depends on how the vision is translated into policy and practice. We offer these questions and proposals to help fill in some of the gaps and bring out the best in the idea of a big society.

The Office for Civil Society has now launched the Big Society Deregulation Taskforce to examine how red tape and bureaucracy can be reduced for charities and community organisations. It will be run jointly with the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, which also wants to cut the administrative burden on small enterprises.
