Influencing Change: improving dialogue between BAME communities and the public sector

This timely event provides an opportunity for people working across areas of health, community safety, housing, education, social and wellbeing, and the environment to discuss and produce models of effective engagement. These will be shared more widely across London. Our aim is to encourage greater understanding of the role the BAME third sector can play as a partner to improve and help deliver agendas locally. To do this, we're bringing together public, private and third sector agencies to formulate strategies which will increase collaborative working.

More information

The role of the BAME third sector and the work these organisations carry out is very often misunderstood. This event offers an opportunity for honest dialogue and a chance to improve understanding about how BAME organisations can work with public sector agents locally towards common objectives.

There will be a number of interactive workshops for groups to discuss how they can be involved in delivering policy driven initiatives at a local level, and put forward questions to key statutory bodies.

Speakers include:

  • Brendan Loughran - recently took the post as Group Director for Learning and Skills at the London Development Agency and will be involved in forming the Third Sector engagement strategy.
  • Jenny Willott MP - Liberal Democrat Shadow Charities Spokesperson. During recent Cabinet Office Questions in the House of Commons, Jenny Willott MP challenged Angela Smith MP, Minister for the Third Sector, over the government's decision to divert £750,000 from the Campaign Research Programme into the Hardship Fund.

Other confirmed speakers include Pragna Patel, Director, Southall Blacksisters, Lela Kogbara, Assistant Chief Executive, London Borough of Islington and Gaynor Humphreys, Director, London Funders.

After the event MiNet will extract best practice and share this more widely across London and with key decisions makers.
