People Power: Campaigning into the next decade Campaigning's future starts here. And it's up to all of us. Campaigning has always been about giving people a voice. But all too often, conferences and events for campaigners only allow the 'experts' to speak. Not People Power. It aims to bring together 200 campaigners, working at all levels, and give them all a voice. It's an open forum. An exchange of ideas. A conversation on the forces that will influence campaigning into the next decade and beyond. People Power 2010 is a collaborative one day conference designed for senior campaigners from UK charities as well as grassroots campaigners. It’s running on 16th March in central London and you can be there.

National Event on Learning for Active Citizenship It is often stated that in Britain we face a ‘democratic deficit’ with fewer people voting in elections, the membership of major political parties in decline, and an increasing dissatisfaction with politicians. Many people are disillusioned with the current political structures which seem to be impervious to everyday concerns and fail to serve the public interest. However, this is not the same as saying that people aren’t interested in politics. Learning for Active Citizenship seeks to engage constructively with political processes, and will develop new skills and educational approaches to change society for the better.

Post-16 citizenship training day The Post 16 citizenship team would like to invite you to a training day launching the new online tool ‘Building a citizenship-rich organisation, an e-tool for whole organisational improvement’. The tool builds on Play Your Part: Post-16 Citizenship Guidance (QCA, 2004) and encourages more strategic, whole organisation, approaches to post-16 citizenship provision. It is organised around a series of issues which will allow the user to understand how citizenship education can support a variety of high profile agendas such as Every Child Matters and the Common Inspection Framework, learner voice, community cohesion, and the prevention of violent extremism.

Liberating Leadership in London A fresh perpective on leadership in the community sector that will be a powerful resource for change. It questions existing assumptions about leadership and draws on the Coalition's grass-roots experience. This is a practical two day programme that will enable development workers to help groups recognise and grow their leadership role.

Collective Action: challenges and opportunities The CSC announce a practical half-day workshop to explore the challenges and opportunities of achieving collective action to influence national policy. Asking what collective action looks like in the new century, the day will include presentations from 21st Century Network, MIND and Unison and group discussions around issues such as gaining trust and commitment, organising collective action and overcoming self-interest. The workshop will be followed by a a drinks reception to celebrate the launch of a new policy document – ‘Unleashing the Potential – community action at the grassroots’

The Role of Community in Economic and Disaster Recovery Years in the making, the Community Development Society and the International Association for Community Development will come together in July 2010 for the first ever joint conference. The conference will offer opportunities for students, practitioners, researchers, and policymakers to share experiences, expertise, and/or research findings on innovative strategies to improve the process and practice of community development. Participants will witness how exciting and innovative community and economic development has played in rebuilding and reconnecting the community.
