What's leadership got to do with the community sector?

Voluntary and community organisations are often sceptical about leadership. It tends to be seen as irrelevant at best, or even completely at odds with their values and principles.

It's easy to see why. Traditional ways of looking at leadership tend to focus on individuals (particularly those in power), with little reference to collective action and democratic decision-making.

Yet in practice, most voluntary and community organisations are already demonstrating leadership. People are involved for the love of it, so they're particularly motivated and active. The sector is characterised by 'doers' and self-starters, people with ideas, drive and dedication who make things happen - all aspects of leadership.

Community Sector Coalition believes that leadership doesn't need to be about individuals with particular traits, it's more about the processes, roles and actions of leadership, and these can be shared out.

Liberating Leadership - is a dynamic and practical new approach to leadership that helps community organisations to unlock their hidden 'people power' and work more effectively.

Hidden leaders - stories of inspirational individuals and go-getting groups that exemplify the community sector. Yet ask these people whether they consider themselves to be a leader, and most will say no.

'The community sector is a powerful force
- it is the cornerstone of sustainable renewal,

it is at the heart of democratic life and needs to
assert its innate leadership as never before'
